With new units at a premium, the Omaha Shops rebuilt the old ones in small batches between 1979 and 1984: 645 power assemblies, all-new wiring, two 36\" fans salvaged from GP9s housed in a unique hood hump, a new sand box on the nose, and an FRA clean-cab interior with AAR control stand — and a refrigerator.
