Looking for the locomotive that defined the modern North American passenger train? Introduced in 1976 by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division for Amtrak, the F40PH descends directly from the freight GP40-2: the same turbocharged 3,000 hp EMD 645E3 V16 diesel (3,200 hp on later units), but with a full carbody and a head-end power alternator driven off the prime mover to heat, light and air-condition the cars. Geared for 103 or 110 mph, it made its mark in intercity and commuter service alike, in Canada as well as the United States. On many later units and on the rebuilds, HEP comes from a separate CAT or Cummins auxiliary engine at the rear, which often meant stretching the carbody. Fifty years on, plenty are still running.
This model reproduces NJ Transit's F40PH-2CAT. The 2CAT suffix marks a rebuild whose head-end power comes from a Caterpillar auxiliary engine at the rear — hence the stretched carbody that immediately sets these machines apart from the original F40PH. Rapido reproduces the road- and unit-specific detail arrangement, with an ESU LokSound DCC and sound decoder factory-installed and the MoPower capacitor system for uninterrupted power. Three road numbers are offered. Pre-order.
