Introduced in 1966, the SD45 was a ground-breaking high-horsepower locomotive: its 20-cylinder 20-645E3 prime mover produced 3,600 hp, a record at the time. Popular with major railroads, it was caught out by the 1973-74 oil embargo, when fuel efficiency and reliability became paramount; many were retired or rebuilt. N&W 1776, built in February 1970 in the 1765-1789 series (Phase IIb2), was repainted for the Bicentennial with its short hood cab, Leslie RS-5T-R horn and Motorola ASP-16 antenna.
This DCC and sound version comes with a factory-installed ESU LokSound 5 decoder with Full Throttle and 20-645E3 sounds, and all the prototype-specific detailing the Rivet Counter line is known for.
