Looking for a truly Canadian locomotive? In the mid-1980s Canadian National was looking to extend the life of its SW1200RS fleet. The first program produced an unexpected machine, quickly nicknamed the "Sweep": the cab of an SW1200RS (SW) mated to the long hood of a GP9 (GEEP), designated GS-413a and GS-413b. All the work was done at the Pointe-Saint-Charles shops in Montreal: SW frame and cab, hood from a retired GP9, new intake filters in the old dynamic-brake blister, the 567C engine upgraded with 645C power assemblies and GP9 radiators that lifted output from 1,200 to 1,300 hp. The rebuilt cab got two small end windows, better insulation and, Canadian tradition obliging, a hot plate and a fridge. Only eight Sweeps left the shops in 1986 and 1987; after CN, some went on to CANAC and then Savage.
This model depicts the Canadian National Sweep in its original large-noodle scheme, as it left the Pointe-Saint-Charles shops: 7100 of class GS-413a and 7102 to 7107 of class GS-413b.
