Looking for a branchline engine with an unusual past? By the late 1960s the Santa Fe's fleet of F-units was wearing out, and the railroad needed close to 200 locomotives for its secondary and branch lines. Rather than buy new, its Cleburne shops stripped the carbodies down to the engine room floor, replaced the underframes with deep side sills and grafted on a GP7-style hood with steps — the CF7 was born. From the first unit in 1969 through 1978, 233 machines left the shops, making the program one of the most successful rebuilds in railroading history. Sold off to regionals and short lines from the mid-1980s onward, a number of them are still at work today in California, Florida and Texas.

This model reproduces the CF7 in the colours of the Pioneer Valley Railroad, a Massachusetts short line — another New England livery for machines born in Texas. Rapido captures the cab and hood variations of the prototype, the open- or closed-slot side sills, and an impressive amount of road- and number-specific detail. ESU LokSound DCC and sound decoder factory-installed, MoPower capacitor system for uninterrupted power, and a heavy die-cast chassis. Two road numbers are offered. Pre-order.
