Rapido HO – Greenbrier Transverse Coil Car
Looking for a thoroughly modern steel car — low, blocky, and giving your trains that present-day look you see on mainlines serving the mills? This collection brings together the versions of Rapido Trains' Greenbrier Transverse Coil Car. Moving steel coils has been a pillar of railroading for generations, and this car represents its very latest evolution — a must-have for lending credibility to your contemporary freight consists and animating your industrial scenes.
Rapido recreates this car from the original drawings, backed by field measurements. Where traditional steel cars carried coils lengthwise, Greenbrier rethought the concept: its five troughs hold the coils transversely, perpendicular to the rail, keeping them from knocking together and getting damaged in transit. Each car can thus hold up to five steel coils of varying sizes, cutting the number of trucks on the highways. Launched in 2021, the design quickly proved itself: over 2,500 have already entered service. The Rapido model stands out for its die-cast metal underframe — a guarantee of optimal weight — its see-through etched-metal walkways, and its removable covers that reveal the troughs. Finely detailed and ready to run, this car brings your layout the realism Rapido is known for.
