The head end of the 2000s Ski Train: this Rapido Trains EMD F40PH locomotive wears the Denver Ski Train's orange-and-silver scheme with “Ski Train” lettering and Rio Grande marks, and comes in three road numbers.
What sets this model apart is Rapido's signature prototype fidelity. In 2000 the Ski Train bought three ex-Amtrak F40PHs to replace its GP40s between Denver and Winter Park; these Amtrak Phase 2b units (280-328 series) are recognizable by their larger 1,800-gallon fuel tank moved forward, relocated air reservoirs and wider Nathan K5LA horn. After the Ski Train ended in 2009, they followed the Tempo cars to Canadian National for the Agawa Canyon Tour Train. Scaled from original blueprints, the model features a full cab interior painted in correct colors, see-through etched-metal radiator and dynamic brake grills, separate underbody piping and a custom ESU LokSound V5 sound decoder.
